Objectives of the Oceans and Human Health Chair

The Oceans and Human Health Chair provides a new, state-of-the-art tool with which to study and disseminate the importance of marine ecosystems on human health and wellbeing.

The main objective of the Oceans and Human Health Chair is to promote and carry out studies on the complex relationships that exist between marine ecosystems and the health of people, as well as the transfer of this knowledge to society.

In this way, the Chair will not only contribute to a better understanding of the links between marine ecosystems and human health, but will also help inform people about a relatively little known aspect: how protecting and preserving marine ecosystems can protect and preserve the health and well-being of people. The specific objectives of the Oceans and Human Health Chair are as follows:

1

To promote and carry out interdisciplinary studies on the topic of Oceans and Human Health, in relation both to the health and well-being of people (health benefits and risks) and the conservation of marine ecosystems (fishing resources, marine habitats, vulnerable species, etc.). The anthropogenic and environmental threats (including climate change) to which the marine ecosystems are subject will be taken into account, with the aim of increasing the health benefits from the sea, and minimizing the risks.

2

To keep society informed with up-to-date knowledge on the topic of Oceans and Human Health, through publications, exhibitions, social networks, conferences, courses and media (TV, radio, press, websites, etc.) with special emphasis on the need to preserve marine ecosystems through protected areas to maintain the health and well-being of people.

3

To establish a discussion forum on the topic of Oceans and Human Health among the various stakeholders, including the scientific community (marine biology and ecology, medicine, veterinary sciences, health promotion, ecotoxicology, oceanography, parasitology, social anthropology, marine biotechnology, economy and tourism, among others); the administrative bodies responsible for managing marine ecosystems and protecting public health; commercial companies and the general public.

Among the goals are the conservation of the seas and oceans and the sustainable use of the marine resources, the promotion of a healthy life and the preservation of people’s wellbeing. The Chair also endorses the One Health Initiative, which is a worldwide strategy for expanding interdisciplinary collaborations and communications in all aspects of health care for humans, animals and the environment.

The Chair shares the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
